Pet owner trends: What drives decisions, behaviors

What drives pet ownership—and how do pet owners make decisions about their pets’ care? This session explores the insights behind the relationship between pet owners and veterinary professionals. Drawing on results from the 2025 AVMA Pet Owner Demographic Survey, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of pet owner demographics, preferences, and behaviors, and discover what shapes their decisions about veterinary care.

This session originally was presented at AVMA’s 2025 Veterinary Business and Economic Forum.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Identify key preferences, attitudes, and behaviors of pet owners regarding veterinary care, pet health, and associated services as revealed by the AVMA Pet Owner Demographic Survey.
  • Evaluate the factors influencing pet owners' decisions about veterinary care.
  • Apply insights from the survey results to develop strategies that enhance client engagement, satisfaction, and retention.
