Fungal zoonotic diseases: Updates

Over the past decade, fungal infections in both animals and people have become an increasing public health concern. In this webinar, veterinary experts delve into the topic of emerging fungal infections, including cat-transmitted sporotrichosis, dermatophytosis, histoplasmosis, and more. 

This webinar was developed by the AVMA in collaboration with an educational partner: the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Jane Sykes has been a professor at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine since 2002. She is a board-certified small animal internal medicine specialist and has a special interest in small animal infectious diseases. She obtained her DVM degree and a PhD in veterinary microbiology at the University of Melbourne in Australia and completed a residency in small animal internal medicine at the University of Minnesota. She earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Georgia in 2020 and a master’s degree in public health with an emphasis on infectious diseases and zoonoses from Kansas State University in 2023. She founded the International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Diseases (ISCAID) in 2006, has coauthored over 130 peer-reviewed publications, and is the editor of the textbooks Canine and Feline Infectious Diseases and Greene’s Infectious Diseases of the Dog and Cat (5th ed). She also is a distinguished fellow of the National Academies of Practice. Her research interests are focused on infectious diseases of dogs and cats with public health significance. 


Dr. Clarissa Souza earned her degree in veterinary medicine from the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2001. There, she also earned a master’s degree and a PhD. She completed her dermatology specialization at the Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil.  

Until 2014, Dr. Souza worked as a clinician focusing on dermatology at a private practice and as a professor, while still doing externships abroad to improve her knowledge and skills. She then completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota and a dermatology residency combined with a master’s degree program at Colorado State University. She is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (DACVD). In 2018, Dr. Souza joined the dermatology and otology service at the University of Illinois as an assistant professor.
