The USP and immediate-use sterile compounding

The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is an independent organization that sets pharmaceutical standards that apply to both human and veterinary medicine. In this session, learn about the three USP General Chapters most pertinent to compounding in veterinary medicine, and how they relate to each other. Explore the purposes of General Chapter <795> Pharmaceutical Compounding-Nonsterile Preparations; General Chapter <797> Pharmaceutical Compounding-Sterile Preparations; and General Chapter <800> Hazardous Drugs-Handling in Healthcare Settings. Come away with strategies for sterile compounding for immediate use in a veterinary practice.

As an assistant director in AVMA’s Division of Animal and Public Health, Dr. Dharati Szymanski serves as staff consultant to the Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents, the Clinical Practitioners’ Advisory Committee, the Council on Public Health, and the Food Safety Advisory Committee. Before joining the AVMA, she served as a shelter veterinarian in the Chicago area and a companion animal veterinarian in the Chicago and Washington, D.C areas.
