The Role of Veterinarians in One Health

Dr. Jonna Mazet, professor and executive director of the One Health Institute at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, discusses how veterinarians are involved in – and in many cases, leading – the One Health movement.

Dr. Jonna Mazet is executive director of the One Health Institute at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. She also is a professor of epidemiology and disease ecology, focusing on solving global health problems, emerging infectious diseases and conservation challenges.

Dr. Mazet is active in international One Health research programs, most notably in relation to disease transmission among wildlife, domestic animals and people, and the ecological drivers of disease emergence. She was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine in 2013 in recognition of her successful and innovative approach to emerging environmental and global health threats. She currently serves on the National Academies’ Forum on Microbial Threats and chairs the organization’s One Health Work Group. She also is global director of PREDICT, a $175 million viral emergence early warning project that is part of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Emerging Pandemic Threats Program.
