Fevers of unknown origin: Making the unknown known

Fevers of unknown origin can be tricky for even seasoned veterinarians. They can be difficult to diagnosis, and they often involve a long and detailed diagnostic plan. Learn the common and uncommon causes of fevers, how to work up a fever of unknown origin, and what to do when every test comes back negative.

Dr. Lawren Durocher-Babek earned her DVM from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation she completed a small-animal rotating internship at Ontario Veterinary College, followed by a small-animal internal medicine residency at the Ohio State University. During her residency, she received a national research award from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) for her work in diabetic ketoacidosis in dogs. She is a diplomate of ACVIM and a hospice and palliative care veterinarian certified through the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC). In 2018 she moved to Hong Kong, where she works as managing director of a multi-hospital veterinary group. Before that, she practiced in private specialty referral hospitals in North Carolina and New Jersey, and consulted throughout the United States. She also served as a contributing reviewer to the AAHA guidelines on diabetes management in 2018.
