Nutrition management is one of the most impactful ways to mitigate disease and help clients keep their pets healthy for years to come. But pet owners don’t always look to their veterinarian as a source of nutrition guidance and information. Learn how to make your veterinary team the preferred nutrition resource for your clients. Discover the ins and outs of implementing a nutrition management program in your practice, including how to collect nutrition history, promote proper nutrition, demonstrate the behaviors that support healthy diet, and make personalized recommendations that meet the needs of each patient.

Kara Burns is a licensed veterinary technician with master’s degrees in physiology and counseling psychology. She began her career in human medicine, working as an emergency psychologist and as a poison specialist dealing with human and animal poisonings.

She has authored many articles, textbooks, and textbook chapters, and is an international speaker on topics of nutrition, leadership, and technician utilization. She founded the Academy of Veterinary Nutrition Technicians and co-developed the North American Veterinary Community’s pet nutrition coach certification courses. She was the first veterinary technician to serve on the board of the American Association of Feline Practitioners, and to be president of the Pet Nutrition Alliance. She also was president of the Academy of Veterinary Nutrition Technicians and the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA). She has served as manager of technician education at Western Veterinary Conference, a member of the American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition’s executive board, an independent nutritional and wellbeing consultant, director of veterinary nurse development for WellHaven Pet Health, and editor-in-chief of Today’s Veterinary Nurse.
